Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, the highly anticipated installment in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure franchise, is set to launch on February 14th. This new entry introduces significant changes, particularly to the parkour system, and features dual protagonists with distinct playstyles.

A Refined Parkour Experience:

Ubisoft has significantly overhauled the parkour mechanics. Gone are the days of climbing virtually any surface. Instead, Shadows introduces designated "parkour highways," carefully designed climbing routes. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. This focused design allows for more controlled level design, particularly considering the game's dual protagonists.

The new system also incorporates seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish and fluid transitions. Players can now smoothly disengage from ledges, performing acrobatic maneuvers instead of the traditional ledge-grabbing descent. Further enhancing mobility, a new prone position enables sprinting dives and slides. As Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains, the change allows for more creative parkour routes and differentiates the abilities of the two protagonists.

Dual Protagonists, Dual Playstyles:

Shadows introduces Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but limited in climbing abilities. This dual-protagonist approach aims to appeal to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Release and Competition:

Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases that month, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more about this highly anticipated title and its potential to capture the gaming world's attention.
