FFXIV Mobile Version Rumors: Is a Smartphone Port on the Horizon?

Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.

A Spotty Mobile History

While this isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games, past attempts have yielded mixed results. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't resonate with all fans, and Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia was ultimately shut down. Adapting a complex MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile is a significant challenge.

Unverified, But Not Implausible

It's crucial to remember that this is unconfirmed; Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent lend some credence to the rumor. Discussions regarding joint projects date back to 2018, with further mentions in 2021 by then-president Yosuke Matsuda.

The leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status and viability uncertain. A formal announcement remains pending.

The Mobile Adaptation Challenge

Successfully translating FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising the depth players appreciate will be a considerable hurdle for Square Enix. A simplified, less engaging version could disappoint the dedicated fanbase.
