Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, a significant development announced at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025.
Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Statements
2K Games and Firaxis Games confirmed the Meta Quest 3/3S exclusivity. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about launching Civ VII and beginning "a new era of strategy excellence." Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing, stating that Civ VII VR demonstrates the momentum in mixed reality gaming and provides a "genuine Civ experience" tailored for strategy enthusiasts. Noteworthy is the absence of a PSVR2 release, despite Civ VII's presence on PlayStation consoles.
Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options
Civ VII VR immerses players in a "Command Table" interface, allowing them to view the game world from various perspectives, mimicking a tabletop experience. Players can seamlessly switch between virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) modes. VR places players in a museum overlooking a personalized vista, while MR adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space.
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. Online multiplayer requires 2K and Meta accounts.
Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates
Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from the early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions), particularly concerning the user interface (UI). They've committed to UI improvements focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish. Planned updates include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March will address UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and bug fixes.

Civilization VII VR's release is slated for Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with a specific date yet to be announced.
