CES 2025: Unveiling the Future of Gaming Laptops

Author : Claire Feb 12,2025

CES 2024 showcased a plethora of gaming laptops, revealing key trends shaping the market. Here's a summary of the most significant developments:

Diverse Design Language:

Gaming laptop aesthetics have expanded beyond the typical gamer-centric look. Manufacturers like Gigabyte and MSI are blurring the lines between productivity and gaming machines. High-end models are emphasizing design elements beyond raw hardware capabilities. This translates to a wider range of styles, from sleek and professional designs (e.g., Gigabyte Aero series) suitable for business settings, to boldly styled laptops (e.g., MSI Titan 18 HX AI Dragonforged Edition) showcasing their gaming prowess. RGB lighting remains a staple, with innovative implementations like Asus ROG Strix Scar's AniME Dot Matrix LED display adding text and animations. Expect a continued evolution of designs, ranging from thin and light to large and powerful configurations.

The Rise of AI Assistants:

AI integration in laptops is advancing, with several vendors showcasing AI assistants capable of controlling PC settings without manual intervention. One demonstration showed an MSI assistant automatically optimizing performance settings based on the selected game. While the practicality and speed advantage over manual adjustments remain to be seen, this technology holds potential for future development.

Innovative Display Technologies:

Mini-LED displays are gaining traction, offering improved contrast and brightness compared to previous iterations. Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte all featured Mini-LED laptops with high local dimming zones. While OLED still holds an edge in contrast, Mini-LED's lack of burn-in risk and superior sustained brightness make it a compelling alternative. Other novelties included the return of the ASUS ROG Flow X13 with USB4 eGPU support and the groundbreaking Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, featuring a unique expanding OLED display. The rollable display, while currently awkward and potentially less durable, represents a significant technological leap.

Ultrabooks for Gaming:

Ultrabook-style gaming laptops are becoming increasingly popular. Manufacturers are embracing thin, light, and minimalist designs, offering powerful performance without sacrificing portability. These laptops are ideal for users who don't require maximum settings on the latest games, or who utilize cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now. Powerful integrated graphics and upscaling technologies like AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and Intel XeSS further enhance the gaming capabilities of these machines, potentially reducing the need for dedicated low-performance GPUs like the RTX 4050M.

The gaming laptop landscape is evolving rapidly. These are just some of the highlights from CES 2024. What trends impressed you the most? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
