Borderlands 4 Refines Its Approach to Humor
Moving Beyond Pandora's Chaotic Charm

Recognized for its quirky comedy and satire of modern culture, the Borderlands series appears to be charting a new course for its fourth main installment. The development team is stepping back from the franchise's signature "meme-heavy" comedy style. Though over 15 years have passed since its debut—defined by loot-driven quests, exaggerated action, and cooperative shooting—the series has remained closely tied to Pandora, the original game's setting. Borderlands 4 aims to break from this "meme-influenced" tradition, focusing on more natural conversations that fit the tone of its new location, Kairos.
"From a story standpoint, it's both a clean slate and an evolution. We're introducing a new planet that contrasts sharply with Pandora, along with a type of antagonist we haven't explored in the past," Borderlands 4's Lead Writer, Taylor Clark, shared in a recent VGC interview.

Clark added, "As a result, the game will offer a sense of novelty and excitement. At the same time, Borderlands 3 concluded with Lilith teleporting Elpis away, and we're continuing that narrative thread."
Additionally, players won't need extensive knowledge of previous characters or games to appreciate the new release.
"You don't have to complete all the earlier titles to follow the story, but longtime fans of Borderlands 3 will find rewarding connections, while newcomers can jump right in without prior experience."

The conversation then turned to a key concern among the fanbase. Details about Borderlands 4 recently surfaced, raising both excitement and caution due to the mixed reactions to Borderlands 3's humor and the criticized film adaptation.
Adapting Humor to a Dystopian Setting

Fortunately, the writing team for Borderlands 4 has acknowledged player feedback.
"We definitely took note of the reactions to Borderlands 3 and considered all constructive critiques," Clark stated. "We're building a brand-new universe and want the tone to reflect the world we're creating."
Although Borderlands became famous for its irreverent comedy and meta-commentary, by recognizing how its audience has matured, the series can evolve as well and tackle more engaging storylines.
Entering the "Simpsons Era" of Writing

As for the future trajectory of Borderlands 4's narrative, Clark likened the team's phase to a "Simpsons Era"—a lighthearted reference to the difficulty of proposing fresh ideas, since Gearbox may have already explored similar concepts in the past. Borderlands 4 Producer, Chris Brock, characterized the creative process as a careful balancing act.
"During writing sessions, when someone suggests a mission resolution, another might say, 'We already did something like that in a previous Borderlands,'" Brock explained. "How much should we innovate, and how much should we preserve the core elements fans love?"
With comparable games appearing over time, the team keeps a close watch on industry trends. An in-depth analysis earlier this year prompted fans to draw parallels between Borderlands 4 and Bungie’s Destiny 2, noting shared gameplay mechanics.

As the series that helped define the looter-shooter category, each Borderlands sequel has faced both acclaim and scrutiny. Brock recognized the impact of competing titles, stating, "We play them all and keep up with industry developments. We might encounter features we admire, but our goal is always to give them the 'Borderlands' treatment."
