Robert Eggers Set to Helm Labyrinth Sequel

Author : Lucy Apr 22,2025

Renowned director Robert Eggers is set to enchant audiences once again, this time with a sequel to the iconic 1986 dark fantasy film, *Labyrinth*. Following the success of his gothic horror movie *Nosferatu*, Eggers will step into the whimsical world originally crafted by Jim Henson, and starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Variety reports that Eggers will not only direct but also co-write the screenplay alongside his frequent collaborator, Sjón, known for their work together on *The Northman*.

The original *Labyrinth* captivated viewers with its story of Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm to rescue her kidnapped baby brother from the clutches of the Goblin King Jareth, portrayed by David Bowie. Surrounded by an array of memorable Henson puppets, the film has remained a cherished classic.

Although a sequel was previously in development with *Sinister* director Scott Derrickson attached, progress stalled without updates since 2023. It seems TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted to entrust the project to Eggers, signaling a fresh take on the beloved universe.

Eggers' plate is full with more than just the *Labyrinth* sequel. He is also slated to direct a werewolf movie titled *Werwulf*, slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English, promising a historically immersive experience complete with the inevitable transformation into a wolf monster.

Fresh off the heels of *Nosferatu*, which hit theaters last Christmas, Eggers continues to make waves. *Nosferatu*, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, unfolds in 19th century Germany and follows a young real estate agent's harrowing encounter with a mysterious count from Transylvania. The film has garnered critical acclaim, receiving four Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
