Kafka's Metamorphosis is an emotionally resonant short-form story game based on the life of Czech writer Franz Kafka and his renowned novella, The Metamorphosis. Set in the autumn of 1912, the game's narrative unfolds during the period Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis, capturing his struggles as a writer navigating the pressures of societal expectations as a young man, employee, and eldest son. The game delves into the underlying reasons behind Kafka's creation of The Metamorphosis.

Drawing inspiration from Kafka's literary world and life, including works such as The Metamorphosis and The Judgment—both deeply connected to his lifelong difficulties with his father—the game explores universal themes. The Metamorphosis, in particular, resonates with its depiction of the struggles of an eldest son transforming into a vermin. Kafka's Metamorphosis uses the novella as a central motif, focusing on Kafka and Gregor Samsa's familial issues, but emphasizes the conflict between Kafka's identity as a writer and his father's expectations. The feeling of insignificance and pressure is a timeless experience, relevant both to Kafka's time in 1912 and our modern lives.

Uncover how Kafka, both as a person and a writer, made his choices and crafted his stories. Kafka's Metamorphosis offers a lyrical and melancholic experience with simple touch controls and a fast-paced, short-form narrative akin to a short film. Players will explore Franz Kafka's daily life and inner world, experiencing a range of emotions and stories. Subsequently reading Kafka's works encountered within the game will provide a fresh and engaging perspective.

Beyond The Metamorphosis and The Judgment, the game also draws inspiration from Kafka's novels like The Castle and The Trial, as well as his diaries and letters. Following Kafka's Metamorphosis, MazM is preparing a story reinterpreting Edgar Allan Poe's classic tales, The Black Cat and The Fall of the House of Usher. This will be MazM's first foray into the horror/occult genre, so stay tuned!
