"Switch 2 Fans Might Be Let Down by Next Pokemon Event"

Summary

  • No news on Switch 2 Pokemon titles expected at the upcoming Pokemon Presents on February 27.
  • Leaks suggest a Switch 2 reveal soon, but Pokemon games will likely remain on the original console for now.
  • The next Pokemon Presents will likely focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon fans eagerly awaiting news on Switch 2 Pokemon titles may need to temper their expectations for the upcoming Pokemon Presents scheduled for Thursday, February 27. The beloved franchise, which has been a staple on Nintendo systems since its debut on the original Game Boy in the 90s, might not make its way to the Switch 2 just yet.

At the time of writing, Nintendo has not officially unveiled the Switch 2. However, the company has confirmed that this next-generation console will be backward compatible with the original Switch, will support the transfer of Nintendo accounts, and is set to be revealed within the current fiscal year. Information beyond this comes from leaks, which suggest that the Switch 2 will be an enhanced, larger version of its predecessor.

While new Pokemon titles are expected to eventually launch on the Switch 2, fans hoping for updates during the next Pokemon Presents should manage their expectations. According to Jeff Grubb, the upcoming event will focus on Pokemon games currently in development for the original Switch. Thanks to the Switch 2's backward compatibility, these titles will also be playable on the new console.

Pokemon Presents Not Expected to Have News on Switch 2 Games

The upcoming Pokemon Presents is likely to feature updates on various ongoing live-service Pokemon games, such as Pokemon GO and Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Additionally, fans are eagerly anticipating news on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch later this year. So far, all that's been revealed about Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a teaser trailer showcasing the Lumiose City setting, some returning Pokemon, and the return of Mega Evolutions.

Rumors also suggest another main series Pokemon game could be released this year, separate from Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the anticipated Generation 10 games. Speculation points toward potential remakes of Pokemon Black and White or another entry in the Let's Go series. These rumored titles are expected to be released for the original Switch, not the Switch 2, assuming the leaked information is accurate. If true, it's likely that the first major Pokemon titles exclusive to the Switch 2 will be the Generation 10 games.

Historically, the Pokemon franchise has often opted to release games on older hardware with larger install bases. For instance, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 were released on the original DS rather than the newer 3DS. It seems the franchise might follow a similar strategy this time around. Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed, so fans will have to tune into the Pokemon Presents on February 27 for the latest updates.
