Assassin's Creed Shadows Gets Censored in Japan

Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) will launch in Japan with significant content alterations to secure a CERO Z rating. This rating, reserved for 18+ audiences, necessitates the removal of dismemberment and decapitation, along with adjustments to depictions of wounds and severed body parts. Audio modifications are also planned, though specifics remain undisclosed.

CERO Z Rating and Content Differences:

Ubisoft Japan's announcement confirms content discrepancies between the Japanese and international (North America/Europe) releases. While the international version will offer players the option to toggle dismemberment and decapitation, the Japanese version will lack these features entirely. The CERO Z rating reflects Japan's stricter standards regarding violence in video games.

This isn't unprecedented for the Assassin's Creed franchise; many previous installments, including AC Valhalla and AC Origins, also received CERO Z ratings. CERO's stringent guidelines on gore and dismemberment have led to challenges for numerous game developers seeking a Japanese release. Notable examples include The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake, both of which forwent a Japanese release due to disagreements over necessary modifications.

Yasuke's Description Altered:

Further changes involve the description of Yasuke, a key protagonist. The Japanese versions of the Steam and PlayStation store listings have replaced the term "samurai" (侍) with "騎当千" (Ikki tousen), meaning "a warrior who can face a thousand enemies." This follows previous criticism surrounding the use of "black samurai" in promotional materials. Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, previously stated the company's focus remains on entertainment for a broad audience, not promoting specific agendas.
