"Abby's Bulk-Up Skipped in The Last of Us Season 2, Says Druckmann"

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will present Abby differently from her video game counterpart, as her muscular build isn't as crucial for the series' narrative, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Druckmann and co-showrunner Craig Mazin explained that actress Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby, didn't need to bulk up for the role. This decision stems from the fact that Abby's mechanical distinctness from Ellie isn't necessary in the TV format.

"We would've struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role," Druckmann stated. He highlighted that in the game, players switch between controlling Ellie and Abby, necessitating different gameplay mechanics. Ellie is designed to feel smaller and more agile, while Abby's gameplay mirrors Joel's, characterized by brute strength and physical dominance. However, Druckmann noted that this aspect is less critical in the TV series, which focuses more on drama than constant violent action.

Mazin added that this change presents an opportunity to explore Abby as a character who might be physically more vulnerable but possesses a stronger spirit. He emphasized the exploration of where Abby's formidable nature originates and how it manifests, hinting at a deeper dive into her character across multiple seasons.

The HBO series plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 beyond a single season, unlike the first season which covered the entire original game. While Season 3 isn't confirmed yet, Season 2 is designed to end at a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes, indicating a longer narrative arc.

The character of Abby has been a focal point of controversy, leading to harassment and threats against Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. This toxicity even affected the production of Season 2, with HBO providing extra security for Dever due to potential risks. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, commented on the bizarre nature of the hate directed towards Abby, reminding fans that she is a fictional character.
