The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. Will their investment of time and money be rendered obsolete by a new iteration? This question remains largely unanswered, but recent comments from Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick offer some insight.
GTA Online's continued success, even a decade after its launch, is a testament to its enduring popularity and profitability. This success likely influenced Rockstar's decision to prioritize live service updates over story DLC for GTA 5, a decision met with mixed reactions from fans. However, the prospect of a new GTA Online (perhaps GTA Online 2) raises concerns about the future of the existing game. Will players be forced to abandon their progress and investments?
In a recent interview, Zelnick addressed these concerns, drawing a parallel to Take-Two's experience with NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, was not replaced by its sequel, NBA 2K Online 2 (released in 2017). Both versions coexisted, allowing players to continue engaging with their preferred version.
Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."
This suggests that Rockstar may follow a similar model with GTA Online. The continued support of the original GTA Online hinges on player engagement. If players remain active, Rockstar may continue supporting it alongside a potential GTA Online 2.
However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. Only a trailer and a release window have been revealed. With Borderlands 4's September release date announcement, Rockstar will likely need to provide more information about GTA 6 and its online component soon.
Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains open. Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for those invested in the current game, but only time will tell if Rockstar will indeed maintain both versions simultaneously.
