Splitgate 2: A New Era of Portal Combat

Splitgate 2 Announcement

1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel launching in 2025. This isn't just an update; it's a complete reimagining built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.

A New Generation of Portal Warfare

The July 18th cinematic trailer showcased a fresh, visually stunning take on the classic Splitgate formula. CEO Ian Proulx stated their ambition to create a game with lasting appeal, emphasizing the development of tools for a deeply engaging gameplay loop. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted a re-evaluation of the portal mechanics, aiming for a more balanced experience, allowing skilled players to excel without making portal usage mandatory for success.

Splitgate 2 Gameplay Hint

While core elements remain, Splitgate 2 promises a completely revitalized feel. Confirmed features include a free-to-play model, a new faction system adding strategic depth, and availability on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Building on the Legacy

Splitgate 2 Environment

The original Splitgate, known for its unique blend of fast-paced arena combat and Portal-inspired wormhole mechanics, achieved remarkable success after its 2019 release. The game's popularity led to server capacity upgrades and a prolonged early access period. Development on the original ceased in September 2022 to focus on this ambitious sequel.

Factions and More

Splitgate 2 Faction Showcase

Splitgate 2 introduces three distinct factions – Aeros (dash-based mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force) – each offering unique playstyles. Importantly, it's confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter.

Gameplay details remain scarce, with Gamescom 2024 promising a more in-depth reveal. However, the developers assure fans the trailer accurately reflects the game's visual quality, weaponry, and portal effects. The return of dual-wielding is also confirmed.

No Single-Player, But Rich Lore

Splitgate 2 Companion App

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will provide access to comics expanding the game's lore, character cards, and a faction quiz to help players find their perfect fit.
