Sony reportedly plans a return to the handheld gaming console market, aiming to challenge Nintendo's Switch. This comes from Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter. However, it's emphasized that the project is in very early development, and Sony might ultimately decide against releasing the console.
Long-time gamers will recall Sony's previous handhelds, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). The Vita's relative failure, despite some popularity, led Sony and other companies to largely abandon the dedicated handheld market in favor of smartphones.
The resurgence of dedicated handhelds, exemplified by the Steam Deck and the continued success of the Nintendo Switch, coupled with the improved capabilities of modern mobile devices, may have convinced Sony that a dedicated portable gaming console could find a niche market.
This potential re-entry is still uncertain. However, the possibility of a new PlayStation portable console is intriguing, especially considering the current landscape of mobile gaming. For now, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 for some great titles to enjoy on your smartphone.
