Sony's Potential Acquisition of Kadokawa: Employee Enthusiasm Amidst Concerns
Sony's confirmed bid to acquire the Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa has sparked a wave of optimism among Kadokawa employees, despite potential loss of independence. While negotiations continue, the reaction highlights underlying issues within Kadokawa.
Analyst Suggests Acquisition Benefits Sony More
Economic analyst Takahiro Suzuki, as reported by Weekly Bunshun, suggests the acquisition primarily benefits Sony. Sony's shift towards entertainment necessitates a stronger IP portfolio, a weakness Kadokawa readily addresses with its extensive catalog, including hits like Oshi no Ko, Dungeon Meshi, and Elden Ring. However, this acquisition could compromise Kadokawa's autonomy. As noted by Automaton West, increased oversight from Sony might stifle creative freedom and lead to stricter publishing controls.
Kadokawa Employees Welcome the Change
Despite the potential downsides, Weekly Bunshun reports widespread employee approval of a Sony takeover. The prevailing sentiment, "Why not Sony?", reflects a dissatisfaction with the current leadership under Takeshi Natsuno.
This discontent stems largely from the company's response to a June cyberattack by the BlackSuit hacking group. The breach compromised over 1.5 terabytes of data, including sensitive employee information, and Natsuno's perceived inadequate handling of the crisis further fueled employee frustration. Many hope a Sony acquisition will lead to a change in leadership.
