Following the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2, it appears that the collaboration between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue seamlessly. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's head of gaming, recently expressed his ongoing support for the Switch platform, emphasizing its role in reaching audiences beyond the traditional Xbox and PC gaming communities.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was questioned about potential projects for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. He affirmed that just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, it aims to extend that support to the Switch 2.
"Nintendo has been a great partner," Spencer stated. "We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox. It lets us continue to grow our community of people that care about the franchises that we have, and that’s really important for us to make sure we continue to invest in our games."
"I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them," Spencer added. "And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future."Spencer has consistently praised the Nintendo Switch 2, especially following its initial teaser, where he commended Nintendo's innovative approach. He also confirmed Xbox's strategy to expand the availability of its games across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When asked by Variety if the Switch 2's reveal has prompted Xbox to hasten announcements regarding its own console lineup, Spencer remained unfazed. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he said. "I get inspired by what a lot of different creators do and other platform holders. But I believe in the plans that we have."
He reiterated Xbox's commitment to delivering games across a wide range of platforms, including cloud, PC, and various consoles. Titles such as Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already been ported to Nintendo platforms, and it will be intriguing to see what Xbox has in store for the Switch 2 upon its official release.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to launch on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have not yet started, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for updates on when they will become available.
