MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game launched in 2024, is set to shut down permanently in the near future.
Player First Games revealed back in January that Season 5 would mark MultiVersus' final chapter, with servers closing for good at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT) on May 30, 2025. The game proved disappointing for Warner Bros. Discovery, with November 2024 financial reports confirming a $100 million write-down attributed to MultiVersus' underperformance. This setback compounded earlier losses totaling $300 million following the lackluster release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League that same January.
Merely a month after this announcement, Warner Bros. confirmed cancellation of its Wonder Woman project and closure of three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games - MultiVersus' original developer.
On a forum thread titled "MultiVersus shuts down tomorrow - share your final thoughts about the game," hundreds of fans gathered to reminisce about their favorite experiences.
"MultiVersus was groundbreaking - a team-focused platform fighter emphasizing fast-paced offense and coordinated 2v2 battles," one player reflected. "Beyond its innovative gameplay, the voice acting stood out with many original actors reprising their iconic roles - Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, among others. The character interactions between matches were particularly memorable."
"While some character inclusions and moveset decisions raised eyebrows (like Ultra Instinct Shaggy and Banana Guard), most gameplay mechanics showed genuine creativity. There truly won't be another game like MultiVersus."

"Nothing compares to playing the 2022 beta - I was completely addicted to its fluid, rapid gameplay," another fan shared. "I recall playing nonstop during a minor illness. While I'll miss it dearly, I hope we eventually see a sequel or revival."
"This game holds a special place in my heart alongside PlayStation All-Stars," wrote one nostalgic player, while another added: "Tom and Jerry offered some of the most inventive fighting mechanics I've ever experienced, reigniting my passion for the genre."

Some fans remain cautiously hopeful, though most acknowledge its unlikely return given the legal complexities surrounding its extensive IP roster. A dedicated few are attempting to preserve the game before servers go dark.
In IGN's 8/10 review, we noted: "While MultiVersus may not dominate party lineups, its innovative team mechanics make it one of the most engaging online platform fighters."
