Cineverse, which holds the U.S. distribution rights for the upcoming third Silent Hill film, confirms Return to Silent Hill will closely follow the narrative of the original Silent Hill 2 game upon its release later this year.
"Silent Hill stands among gaming's most remarkable franchises, and Christophe Gans has masterfully recreated its haunting atmosphere in Return to Silent Hill," Brandon Hill, Cineverse's executive director of acquisitions, shared with Variety.
Director Christophe Gans remarked: "Collaborating with Cineverse has been rewarding—they truly appreciate fan expectations. Our adaptation honors Konami's groundbreaking Silent Hill 2, and I'm confident longtime fans will find this cinematic interpretation deeply satisfying."
Fans of Silent Hill 2 or its 2024 Bloober Team remake will recognize the storyline: James (Jeremy Irvine), shattered by the disappearance of his beloved (Hannah Emily Anderson), follows a cryptic summons back to Silent Hill—only to discover the town warped by supernatural malevolence and haunted by nightmarish creatures. Revealed in October 2022, production culminated in May 2024 with our first look at Pyramid Head in Gans' vision.
Gans' initial Silent Hill film—a loose adaptation of the first game—traces Rose's desperate search for her daughter Sharon in a town defying natural laws. Despite Roger Avary's (Oscar-winning co-writer of Pulp Fiction) screenplay, our review scored it 5/10: "While visually striking, this adaptation exemplifies why video game films struggle—it prioritizes aesthetic over engagement, rendering Silent Hill more tiresome than terrifying."

The non-Gans-helmed sequel Silent Hill: Revelation, loosely drawing from Silent Hill 3, fared worse at 4.5/10 in our appraisal: "This lifeless follow-up lacks the original's intrigue or frights—a franchise nadir that may have permanently stymied future adaptations."
Cineverse plans a nationwide U.S. theatrical release for Return to Silent Hill later this year.
