The cast for Star Wars: Starfighter is coming together, with Mia Goth reportedly joining Ryan Gosling in the upcoming science fiction film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goth, best known for her roles as Maxine Minx and Pearl in the X horror film series, is set to play a villain in the Star Wars movie directed by Deadpool & Wolverine's Shawn Levy. Filming is scheduled to begin in England this autumn, with a planned release on May 28, 2027.
THR also indicated that Gosling's character is tasked with protecting his young nephew from sinister forces, one of whom is portrayed by Goth’s character. Lucasfilm has not issued a statement regarding the casting.
In terms of the Star Wars timeline, Starfighter is set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the sequel trilogy. However, director Levy has emphasized that the film is a standalone story. "This is a standalone project. It is not a prequel or a sequel," he explained during Star Wars Celebration 2025 in April. "It’s a completely new adventure, set in a previously unexplored era."
Starfighter is expected to be the next Star Wars film released following 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. The title is shared with a series of video games from the PlayStation 2 and Xbox era, with Star Wars: Starfighter launching in 2001 and its sequel, Jedi Starfighter, arriving in 2002. However, the movie is not anticipated to draw plot elements from the games.

The Rise of Skywalker concludes with the ultimate defeat of Emperor Palpatine, yet it offers limited detail about the state of the galaxy following the Battle of Exegol. Daisy Ridley is confirmed to reprise her role in a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will follow Rey as she works to reestablish the Jedi Order approximately 15 years after the events of that film. Starfighter, therefore, is set earlier in the timeline.
