Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Author : Emery Feb 28,2025

Six years after Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania hit Hollow Knight, the game's release remains shrouded in mystery. Despite appearances at various events and a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 launch (by Microsoft, no less), Silksong skipped The Game Awards. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring news?

Fans believe so, and it all started with a cake.

Sharp-eyed members of the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He tweeted, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was suspicious. The Switch 2 announcement indeed followed, leaving fans questioning Pellen's cryptic message.

This is where things got interesting. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2nd, 2024. The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led fans to believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the tweet and cake image.

The speculation didn't stop there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and his new name, "little bomey." One compelling theory links "everydruidwaswr" (15 characters, matching Twitter's handle limit) to a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. "Little bomey" resembles a Southern Australian wine, aligning with Team Cherry's location, but the slight spelling difference adds to the intrigue.

Recall that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. Six years later, the question remains: has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all elaborate fan speculation fueled by anticipation?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's explore the other announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
