George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has declared the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a remarkably faithful adaptation.
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that HBO has completed filming for the six-episode series, slated for release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous involvement with House of the Dragon, Martin expressed enthusiastic approval, stating he's already viewed all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts). He praised the casting, particularly highlighting Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg), calling them "incredible."
"I loved them," Martin wrote. "Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall."
He emphasized the series' fidelity to The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella: "It’s as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject)."
However, Martin cautioned viewers expecting high-octane action. While a significant fight scene is included, he clarified that the series prioritizes character development over large-scale battles or fantastical elements: "There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers. This is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means."
HBO has already released promotional images and a short teaser trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, despite its release still being months away.
Martin concluded his post with a playful reminder of his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter and future Dunk & Egg stories, stating his intention to adapt The Sworn Sword next, followed by The Village Hero and other installments in the series.
