Mobile gaming's innovative spirit is something we truly appreciate, particularly its impact on game design. Smartphones, with their unique buttonless design and massive global reach, have propelled video games in unexpected directions, and Roia is a prime example.
This clever puzzle-adventure is the latest creation from Emoak, the ambitious indie studio behind Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the award-winning light puzzle game, Lyxo.
Surprisingly, *Roia* centers around creating a river. Starting at a mountain's peak, you guide a cascading stream to the sea by skillfully shaping the terrain with your finger.Emoak's press release reveals the game holds deep personal meaning for lead designer, Tobias Sturn. He spent his childhood playing in the creek behind his grandparents' home, building waterwheels, bridges, and other contraptions with his grandfather to explore water's flow.
Sturn's grandfather passed away during Roia's development, but the joy of those creekside days is evident in the game, which is dedicated to his memory.
Gameplay-wise, Roia defies easy categorization. While challenges exist on your river-building journey, the core experience is one of relaxation.
Your adventure unfolds across beautifully crafted environments – forests, meadows, and charming villages. A helpful white bird guides you along the way.
The screenshots showcase Roia's elegant, minimalist aesthetic, reminiscent of Monument Valley. What the images don't convey is its captivating soundtrack, composed by Johannes Johannson (also behind Lyxo's music).
Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and App Store for $2.99.
