A recent Destiny 2 update inadvertently caused a widespread issue: the game's moderation system reset a large number of player usernames. This article details the problem, Bungie's response, and what players can do.
Destiny 2 Players' Names Mysteriously Altered After Update
Bungie to Offer Free Name Changes
Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced. Affected players reported their usernames changed to "Guardian" followed by a random number string. This started around August 14th, and was a result of a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation tools.
Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X): "Our name moderation tool incorrectly changed a significant number of account names. We're investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on providing all players with an additional name change token."
Bungie's system normally flags and changes usernames violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, countless players with perfectly acceptable names were affected – some having used the same name since 2015.
Bungie swiftly investigated, confirming the issue and its impact on a large player base through further tweets. They subsequently reported identifying and fixing the root cause: "The issue causing the mass Bungie name changes has been identified and resolved server-side. Further accidental changes are prevented," they stated on Twitter (X).
They confirmed plans to distribute free name change tokens to all players as compensation. "More details will be shared as they become available," they added.
Players are advised to remain patient and await further announcements from Bungie. Those impacted by the accidental name changes can expect a future name change token and continued communication from the developers.
