In The Witcher 4, a significant shift is underway: Ciri replaces Geralt as the protagonist, sparking much anticipation about how this will reshape gameplay, especially the combat system. CD Projekt RED recently offered insights during a podcast episode.
A trailer scene showcasing Ciri battling a monster reveals a key difference. She uses a chain – a stylish callback to The Witcher 1 – to subdue her foe. However, it's her acrobatic fighting style that truly stands out.
The developers themselves highlighted the contrast between Ciri and Geralt's combat approaches:
"There was this one scene where we see the chain, which is a tribute to The Witcher 1. When she grabs the monster’s head with it and pins it to the ground, she also performs an additional flip, which was really cool because you can’t imagine Geralt doing something like that. He’s very… I’d say he’s agile, but he’s also very… he feels almost like a ‘block’ in a way—he’s bulky and heavy. And she [Ciri] is just… she’s practically like liquid compared to [Geralt]."
This perfectly encapsulates the difference. Geralt's combat relies on strength and precise strikes. Ciri's, conversely, is fluid, dynamic, and infused with her signature agility. Her acrobatic maneuvers promise a thrilling, fast-paced combat experience unlike Geralt's grounded style.
The Witcher 4's shift to Ciri as the lead character suggests a more fluid and faster combat system, reflecting her unique abilities and personality. As CD Projekt RED continues to unveil details, excitement builds. Will Ciri's gameplay successfully carry the torch from Geralt? Only time will tell.
