Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams Big, But Stays Grounded: A Look at Potential Crossovers
Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list of dream crossovers for the game, sparking excitement among fans. His initial tweet praising the tabletop game Trench Crusade led to a playful exchange and the suggestion of a potential collaboration. While enthusiastic about the possibility, Pilestedt quickly tempered expectations, citing the considerable challenges involved.
Trench Crusade, a skirmish wargame set in an alternate WWI with warring forces of Heaven and Hell, presented an intriguing potential partner. However, Pilestedt clarified that his initial comments were simply "fun musings," not concrete plans. He subsequently expanded his dream crossover list to include major sci-fi franchises like Alien, Starship Troopers, Terminator, Predator, Star Wars, and Blade Runner.
The allure of such collaborations is undeniable, given the popularity of crossover content in live-service games. Helldivers 2's intense combat and alien battles seem perfectly suited for these partnerships. However, Pilestedt emphasized a commitment to maintaining the game's unique satirical, militaristic tone. He expressed concern that incorporating too many crossovers would dilute the Helldivers identity, resulting in a game that feels less authentic.
While open to the possibility of both large and small crossover elements (a single weapon or a character skin, perhaps acquired via in-game currency), Pilestedt stressed that these remain personal preferences and that no decisions have been made. This cautious approach is commendable, particularly considering the trend of live-service games often overwhelming their core experience with excessive crossover content.
The future of crossovers in Helldivers 2 remains uncertain. While the potential for intriguing combinations exists—imagine Super Earth soldiers battling Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator—the developers' priority remains preserving the game's integrity. For now, the focus is on delivering a cohesive and authentic Helldivers experience.
