Persistent PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Impacts PS5 Pro Owners
Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives persists, frustrating gamers. The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive necessitates the purchase of this separate accessory, creating high demand.
This situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers aggressively acquiring and reselling drives at exorbitant prices. Both the US and UK PlayStation Direct online stores consistently show the drives as out of stock, with any available units disappearing rapidly. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally stock them, availability remains extremely limited.
Sony's silence on this issue is notable, especially considering their past efforts to address production challenges. The added cost of the drive ($80 from official sources) further exacerbates the problem, particularly when coupled with the already high price of the PS5 Pro. The combination of high demand, limited supply, and scalping activities leaves many players with little option but to wait for improved availability. This wait, however, shows no immediate signs of ending.
