Pokemon GO to End Support for Select Devices Soon

Pokemon GO enthusiasts using older mobile devices are in for a significant change, as the popular augmented reality game will soon become unplayable on certain phones. Specifically, 32-bit Android devices will lose support following updates scheduled for March and June 2025. This shift aims to enhance the game's performance on newer devices, but it means that long-time players with outdated phones must consider upgrading if they wish to continue their adventures in catching and battling Pokemon.

Since its launch in July 2016, Pokemon GO has celebrated nearly nine years of engaging players in real-world exploration. The game saw an astounding peak of 232 million active players in its debut year, and as of December 2024, it still boasts over 110 million players within a 30-day period. However, the upcoming updates will exclude some of these players, particularly those using phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3, Sony Xperia Z2, Z3, Motorola Moto G (1st generation), LG Fortune, Tribute, OnePlus One, HTC One (M8), ZTE Overture 3, and other Android devices released before 2015.

Niantic, the game's developer, announced on January 9 that the first update in March will impact Android devices that downloaded Pokemon GO from the Samsung Galaxy store. The subsequent June update will target 32-bit Android devices that obtained the game via Google Play. Fortunately, 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will continue to be supported. Players affected by these changes are advised to save their login information securely, as they will need it to access their accounts on a new, compatible device. This includes any Pokecoins they might have purchased, which they won't be able to access until they upgrade their phones.

Despite the setback for some, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for the Pokemon franchise. Fans are eagerly anticipating the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, along with rumors of remakes of Pokemon Black and White and a new addition to the Let's Go series. While the specifics for Pokemon GO's developments in 2025 remain under wraps, a rumored Pokemon Presents event on February 27 might shed more light on what's in store for players.
