DC Studios head James Gunn has officially announced that the highly anticipated Season 2 of "Peacemaker" will premiere on Max on August 21. Alongside this exciting news, Gunn shared a brief teaser clip showcasing John Cena's character in action, complete with a smirking glance at the camera amidst a backdrop of flames. In the snippet, it's revealed that Peacemaker is now recognized as a superhero.
In a tweet, Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the Season 2 premiere is "one of my favorite things ever." This announcement comes hot on the heels of the July 11 release of "Superman," which marks the beginning of Gunn's reimagined DC Universe (DCU). "Peacemaker" Season 2 will be the third installment in this new universe, following the "Creature Commandos" TV series from last year and this summer's "Superman" film.
Gunn's revamped DCU aims to move away from the criticized DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which included films like "Justice League," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and "Man of Steel." However, certain elements from the old universe will carry over into the new. "Peacemaker" serves as a prime example of this transition, with Season 1 having been part of the DCEU and Season 2 now integrated into the DCU.
Gunn has assured fans that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," though the specifics of what will transition from the DCEU to the DCU remain undisclosed. He confirmed that the entire Team Peacemaker will return, with John Cena reprising his role as the titular character, joined by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Moreover, Gunn noted that "Peacemaker" Season 2 will be set after the events of both "Creature Commandos" and "Superman," with the latter's events directly impacting Peacemaker's storyline.
