Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game on Android called MageTrain, which is a fast-paced pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike. If you're familiar with Nimble Quest, you'll find MageTrain's gameplay reminiscent of it, as it draws significant inspiration from that title.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain ingeniously blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes. In this game, you control a line of heroes that trails behind you, much like a snake, each autonomously attacking as you maneuver around an arena. Your primary task is to strategically manage the positioning of your heroes to avoid collisions with enemies or obstacles. The placement of each hero within the 'train' is crucial, as their abilities vary depending on their position, whether leading or following.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine heroes, including one unique character who throws birds. Each hero possesses distinct skills that are influenced by their role in the lineup. Players can navigate through eight diverse dungeons, battle against 28 different enemy types, and harness 30 skills to fortify their team. Along the journey, you'll gather gold and power-ups, enhancing your chances of success.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that each run is unique. You'll explore branching paths, select upgrades, and strive to last as long as possible. This structure is similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where levels are not fixed, and there's no option to save progress mid-run. If you make a mistake, whether by crashing into something or being overrun by foes, you'll have to start anew.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The excitement in MageTrain stems from the continuous improvement you experience with every run, even in defeat. You'll learn when to adopt a defensive stance, when to go on the offensive, and when simply surviving for another 30 seconds is the best strategy.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. Head over to the Google Play Store to dive into this dynamic gaming experience.
