Tantalus Media, the studio behind acclaimed Nintendo remasters like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Skyward Sword HD, is revealed as the developer of the upcoming Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for Nintendo Switch. The original Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, saw Luigi tackling ghostly mansions to recover the fragments of the Dark Moon and defeat King Boo.
Nintendo unveiled the Switch remake last September during a Nintendo Direct and confirmed its June 27th release date this past March. Following a new trailer and the reveal of the game's file size, the developer remained a secret until recently.
Gaming news site VGC uncovered Tantalus Media's involvement, identifying them in the game's credits. Tantalus Media's portfolio also includes the Nintendo Switch port of Sonic Mania, the PC port of House of the Dead, and contributions to the Age of Empires Definitive Editions. They're taking the reins from Next Level Games, the original developers of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
Zelda Remaster Studio Behind Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
Early reviews of Luigi's Mansion 2 HD are positive, praising it as another high-quality Nintendo remaster, similar to Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. However, the game recently faced pre-order issues mirroring those experienced by Paper Mario, with Walmart cancelling some orders.
The late reveal of Tantalus Media follows a pattern for Nintendo, keeping developer information under wraps until close to launch. This was also the case with Super Mario RPG's developer, ArtePiazza. Similarly, the developer of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey remains undisclosed, suggesting a similar strategy for future releases.
