Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next project, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. While fans eagerly await the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 later this year, the studio's full attention is now on crafting a new, yet-to-be-revealed game.
Reflecting on their journey, Larian's CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter to express nostalgia and excitement about what lies ahead. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke teased, hinting at more to come from the studio. In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that their focus is entirely on the next title, which will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or another Dungeons & Dragons game. Instead, it's a fresh project that the team is eager to explore after failing to generate internal enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.
Vincke has previously hinted at the studio's next big game, expressing excitement and a desire to push boundaries, especially in light of Baldur’s Gate 3’s success at The Game Awards. Additionally, in discussions with IGN, Vincke mentioned the possibility of returning to the Divinity: Original Sin series, though he emphasized the need for a creative break after completing Baldur’s Gate 3. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," he stated, acknowledging the dedication of the 400 developers who poured their hearts and souls into the game.
With Larian's history rooted in fantasy RPGs, speculation abounds about the nature of their next project. Could it be a venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or perhaps an entirely new genre? While the details remain under wraps, it's clear that fans may have to wait years before learning more about what Larian has in store.
