Three Kingdom Heroes brings top-level AI challenges to chess-like duels, coming soon

Author : Thomas Jan 17,2025

Koei Tecmo unveils a new Three Kingdoms game: Heroes, a chess and shogi-inspired mobile battler. Players command historical figures with unique abilities, engaging in strategic turn-based combat. However, the standout feature is the GARYU AI, a challenging adaptive system developed by HEROZ, the creators of the world champion shogi AI, dlshogi.

The Three Kingdoms era, a rich tapestry of legend and history, has inspired countless games. Koei Tecmo, a leading developer in this space, expands its franchise with Three Kingdoms Heroes, offering a fresh approach for both veterans and newcomers. The familiar art style and epic storytelling remain, but this title introduces a captivating turn-based board game format, featuring diverse abilities and tactical maneuvers employed by iconic Three Kingdoms characters.

Launching January 25th, the game's true innovation lies in its GARYU AI. This isn't just another AI; it's a sophisticated system capable of adapting to player strategies, providing an unprecedented level of challenge. Developed by HEROZ, the same team behind the two-time World Shogi Championship-winning AI, dlshogi, GARYU promises a truly lifelike and demanding opponent.

While AI boasts often fall short, GARYU's pedigree, honed through its success in the shogi world, is compelling. Though comparisons to Deep Blue and its chess victories are inevitable, the potential for a genuinely challenging, adaptive AI in a game steeped in strategic warfare is undeniably exciting. The prospect of facing such a formidable opponent is a major draw for this title.
