Grammy Nomination Spotlights

The 8-Bit Big Band's Jazz Arrangement of Persona 5's "Last Surprise" Earns Grammy Nomination

The orchestral jazz rendition of Persona 5's iconic battle theme, "Last Surprise," performed by The 8-Bit Big Band, has received a Grammy nomination! This marks the band's second Grammy nod, following their 2022 win for their "Meta Knight's Revenge" cover. The "Last Surprise" arrangement, featuring Grammy-winning musician Jake Silverman (Button Masher) on synth and Jonah Nilsson (Dirty Loops) on vocals, is competing in the "Best Arrangement, Instruments, and Vocals" category at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Bandleader Charlie Rosen expressed his excitement on X (formerly Twitter), celebrating his fourth consecutive Grammy nomination. This nomination highlights the growing recognition of video game music within the broader music industry. The 8-Bit Big Band's cover will face stiff competition from artists like Willow Smith and John Legend.

The original "Last Surprise," composed by Shoji Meguro, is a fan-favorite track from Persona 5, known for its energetic bassline and catchy melodies. The 8-Bit Big Band's arrangement cleverly incorporates elements of jazz fusion, further enhancing the song's appeal. The collaboration with Button Masher brought a sophisticated harmonic sensibility that complements Dirty Loops' signature style.

Beyond "Last Surprise," the 2025 Grammys also announced nominees for "Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media." This year's contenders include:

  • Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (Pinar Toprak)
  • God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla (Bear McCreary)
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (John Paesano)
  • Star Wars Outlaws (Wilbert Roget, II)
  • Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (Winifred Phillips)

Bear McCreary continues his remarkable streak, earning a nomination every year since the category's inception. The "Best Score Soundtrack" award has previously recognized Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

The 8-Bit Big Band's Grammy nomination underscores the enduring power of video game music and its ability to inspire creative reinterpretations that resonate with a wider audience. The 2025 Grammy Awards ceremony takes place on February 2nd. [Insert YouTube Embed Link Here]
