God of War TV Series OverhaulThe highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a complete creative reset. Multiple producers have departed, forcing a fresh start for the project. Read on for details on the key departures and Sony and Amazon's revised plans.

God of War TV Series: A Creative Reboot

The Show is Not Cancelled

God of War TV Series OverhaulRecent reports confirm that the God of War series adaptation will be rebooted. Showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the project, despite reportedly completing multiple scripts. Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.

However, some key figures remain attached. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio’s Creative Director) continues as an executive producer, alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Cancellation is not on the table.

Future Plans Despite Setbacks

God of War TV Series OverhaulThe Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War adaptation was announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 game reboot. This initiative reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television, a strategy that led to the creation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This also includes the Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with more adaptations of beloved franchises planned.

Other successful video game adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (set for release on April 25, 2025).
