Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is defying retirement plans and embarking on a new project inspired by Final Fantasy VI. This follows the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially envisioned as his final game.
A Spiritual Successor to FFVI
Sakaguchi, in an interview with The Verge, revealed his desire to create a game reminiscent of Final Fantasy VI. While Fantasian was intended as his swan song, the positive experience collaborating with his team prompted him to continue. This new project, described as "part two of my farewell note," aims to blend classic and innovative elements. The same team behind Fantasian is on board for this venture.
Development Update
A 2024 Famitsu interview confirmed the project's progress. Sakaguchi indicated the script was completed a year prior, suggesting a potential release within two years. A Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled speculation of a sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.
Reunion with Square Enix
The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a significant return to Sakaguchi's roots. He reflected on the experience as a "fascinating" full-circle moment, given his career origins at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this collaboration, he remains focused on his independent vision and has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise.
