Final Fantasy 14 North American Servers Suffer Major Outage, Likely Due to Power Failure
Final Fantasy XIV experienced a significant server outage affecting all four North American data centers on January 5th, around 8:00 PM Eastern. Initial reports suggest the cause was a local power outage in Sacramento, possibly resulting from a blown transformer, rather than a DDoS attack. Service was restored within an hour.
This incident follows a year of persistent DDoS attacks targeting Final Fantasy XIV servers throughout 2024. These attacks, characterized by an influx of malicious data packets, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix implemented mitigation strategies, completely preventing DDoS attacks remains a challenge. Players often utilize VPNs to circumvent these issues.
However, the recent outage appears unrelated to these ongoing DDoS attacks. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion or popping sound in Sacramento, consistent with a blown transformer, around the time of the outage. This aligns with the timing of the server disruption and the geographic limitation of the outage to North American data centers; European, Japanese, and Oceanic servers remained unaffected.
Square Enix acknowledged the problem on the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation. While the Aether, Crystal, and Primal Data Centers have returned to service, the Dynamis Data Center was still offline at the time of this writing.
The server issues represent another challenge for Final Fantasy XIV, especially considering ambitious plans for 2025, including the launch of a mobile version. The long-term impact of these recurring server problems remains to be seen.
