Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Returns in Future Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that their comeback is "always a possibility," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection includes six classic titles, among them Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which introduced three unique characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon. These characters have been largely absent from recent installments, appearing only in minor cameos. Matsumoto believes the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially sparking renewed interest.
"This is actually a great opportunity for us," Matsumoto explained. "A lot more people will familiarize themselves with these characters." He further hinted at the possibility of their inclusion in other Capcom fighting games, such as Street Fighter 6, if fan demand is strong enough. "If there's enough interest... maybe there's a chance they could appear."
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been a long-time goal for Capcom, stemming from discussions with Marvel that spanned several years. Matsumoto emphasized the team's desire to bring more legacy fighting games to modern platforms, including those lacking rollback netcode or current-gen availability. He highlighted the potential for this re-release to invigorate the community and expand Capcom's creative possibilities.
Capcom's plans extend beyond this collection, with ambitions for a new Versus series title and the re-release of other classic fighting games. However, Matsumoto acknowledged that these projects require collaboration and time. The immediate focus remains on the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, aiming to reignite fan interest in these beloved characters and potentially pave the way for their triumphant return.
