This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game collection, many of which still receive re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, today, everyone enjoys them across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order).
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't as strong, both games are a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of the PlayStation's success. Yes, the remake exists, but the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, even with its dated polygons. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, less philosophical and more reminiscent of an action-packed adventure. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
A slightly more niche pick, G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygons haven't aged flawlessly, their charm is undeniable. The vibrant colors, engaging capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I've included only this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following one of gaming's most beloved RPGs, falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy. However, viewed independently, it's a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast of characters. Plus, it boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I enjoy most Mega Man games, my opinion is colored by nostalgia. Objectively recommending the series, only a few titles stand out. For Mega Man X, X4 is superior, exhibiting better cohesion than its predecessors. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to form your own opinion.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a fascinating platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Knowing its creator also made Ghosts ‘n Goblins provides context for its deceptively challenging gameplay.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn game, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Created by many Lunar developers, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' Lunar series.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft, a PlayStation icon, had five adventures on the platform. While quality varied, the original remains a highlight, prioritizing tomb raiding over action. This collection lets you decide your favorite among the first three games.
moon ($18.99)
A deeper cut, originally Japan-only, moon deconstructs the typical RPG, even described by its creators as an "anti-RPG." More of an adventure game, it's unique and thought-provoking, though not consistently fun. Its unconventional approach and message are noteworthy.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thanks for reading!
