James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows

Author : Charlotte Mar 14,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression in a recent TV spot. The 30-second spot featured new footage: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, possibly searching for the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll while flying over an icy landscape.

PlayThe scene of Superman flying sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on his seemingly unnatural facial stillness while his hair and cape billowed. While some attributed this to CGI imperfections, Gunn clarified on Threads that no CGI was used on Superman's face. He explained that the effect was due to the close-up wide-angle lens used and that the Svalbard background was entirely real, as was David Corenswet's performance.

One Threads user praised the spot's Superman flying sequence but noted the unusual facial expression, suggesting potential CGI refinement. Gunn responded, stating unequivocally that there was "absolutely zero CG in his face." He attributed the perceived anomaly to the lens used and emphasized the authenticity of the location and Corenswet's acting.

Despite Gunn's explanation, debate continues regarding the shot itself, with comparisons drawn to Adam Warlock's flight sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Excitement for the Superman movie remains high, alongside this ongoing discussion. Superman is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. For further information, IGN offers detailed breakdowns of the DC heroes and villains in the new trailer, James Gunn's comments on Krypto's on-screen portrayal, insights into the film's thematic focus on hope, and more.
