Travis Willingham: Critical Role Video Game Announcement Imminent

Excitement is building as the popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of unveiling its first major video game. CEO Travis Willingham hinted to Business Insider that an announcement could be imminent, stating it might happen “any day.” Although details like the game’s title and its specific connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured that the development team is diligently working on the project.

Willingham described the upcoming video game spinoff as an interactive experience where players will take the reins, steering the story and potentially altering outcomes. This game promises to not only feature beloved characters but also introduce fresh elements within the world of Exandria.

From humble beginnings, Critical Role has expanded into a vast universe, with one of its most notable achievements being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's other ventures, though it won't necessarily directly connect with them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in the “active pursuit” of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, noting they were nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group’s established campaigns or introduce an entirely new narrative within the Critical Role universe.

Originally, the team anticipated announcing the game before the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, well into 2025, the announcement seems closer than ever. Reflecting on the project, Willingham told Rolling Stone, “Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem.”

While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been set, fans can look forward to more updates soon. In the meantime, stay tuned for initial details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
