In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you primarily play as the Wanderer on his peace-seeking journey. This involves significant story choices, and battles often include companions fighting alongside you.

While companions remain your allies on the battlefield, you can temporarily control them. These companions are exceptionally powerful, often surpassing the Wanderer in combat effectiveness, even with his upgrades. Here's how to switch characters:

Character Switching in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Character switching is only possible during battles where you have a companion. Before a battle, the companion selection is the final option in the pre-battle menu. You can choose to fight alone, but companion switching isn't available then. Once the battle starts, your companion's health bar appears below yours in the bottom right corner.

Beneath their health bar is a blue meter, similar to your Musou gauge. This meter fills as you fight, accelerating with:

  • Parrying attacks
  • Perfect dodges
  • Officer assaults
  • Weapon Arts usage

Most combat actions contribute to filling this meter, albeit at varying speeds.

A "Change Character" button appears next to the companion's meter once it's full. Press and hold this button (View button on Xbox, C on PC, or Touchpad on PlayStation) for about a second to switch characters.

Playing as Companions in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Switching characters mid-battle is strategically advantageous, as companions are formidable. However, control is temporary, lasting roughly a minute. The blue meter that triggered the switch gradually depletes, indicating the remaining time. Your new character starts with full Bravery and a range of highly effective combat arts.

The character switch initiates with a powerful attack, so target an enemy strategically. Your companion also retains their own filled Musou and health bars, allowing immediate use of their special attacks for devastating effects.
