Star Wars: Hunters, Zynga's inaugural foray into the Star Wars franchise, is set to close its doors just over a year after its launch on iOS and Android. The game, which debuted in June 2024, initially captured attention with its unique blend of game show aesthetics and innovative takes on Star Wars archetypes. However, it has now been announced that Star Wars: Hunters will cease operations on October 1st of this year, with a final content update scheduled for April 15th. In response to the shutdown, Zynga has made in-game currency eligible for refunds and plans to rerun certain seasonal events, extending season three.
Fans eagerly anticipating the arrival of the final hunter, Tuya, will be pleased to know that they will still be able to experience this character in multiplayer. Tuya will be introduced in the final content update and will be available to play for free from the start.
Story's Over
The announcement of Star Wars: Hunters' closure came as a surprise, with little prior indication of underperformance. Given Zynga's robust standing in the gaming industry, there must be underlying reasons for shelving the game. I speculate that the pseudo-hero shooter genre might be oversaturated, and the target audience, increasingly older Star Wars fans, may not be seeking high-octane multiplayer experiences on their mobile devices.
