Sega describes the game as, "Players control a character from the Sonic series as they navigate a toy world crafted by the nefarious Dr. Eggman, tackling treacherous obstacle courses and hazardous arenas!"

As a free-to-play title, concerns about pay-to-win mechanics have surfaced. However, Sonic Rumble Director Makoto Tase addressed these concerns during an interview with Automaton at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 in September 2024. He stated, "Our goal is to implement a casual system where players can quickly purchase desired items for a small, fixed fee, steering clear of gacha systems that offer items based on chance."
