Pokémon TCG Scarlet & Violet: Best Expansion Yet Previewed

Pokémon TCG: Destined Rivals Expansion Set to Release May 30, 2025

Mark your calendars, trainers - the next Pokémon TCG Scarlet & Violet expansion, Destined Rivals, launches May 30, 2025, and it's shaping up to be an absolute game-changer. After getting exclusive early access, I can confidently say this set delivers everything Pokémon fans have been craving.

First Impressions: A Collector's Dream

From the very first pack I opened, Destined Rivals reminded me why I fell in love with the Pokémon TCG. The breathtaking artwork immediately stands out - even common cards feature stunning illustrations that make you pause and appreciate each piece. The return of nostalgic characters like Ethan from Gold/Silver adds serious emotional weight for longtime fans.

But this isn't just a nostalgia trip. Destined Rivals introduces brilliant new mechanics that revitalize deckbuilding. Trainer-focused Pokémon cards create deeper strategic options and make each pull feel more meaningful. And let's talk about those pull rates - after recent disappointing sets, opening these packs actually feels rewarding again.

Unboxing Highlights

Through multiple product openings, I consistently found myself excited about nearly every pack:

Build and Battle Box

The perfect starting point featuring a 40-card starter deck plus four boosters. Pulling an ex and Illustration Rare from the included packs made deck construction immediately engaging with the new Trainer-Pokémon synergy.

Elite Trainer Box

While my personal pulls were modest, the Team Rocket-themed box design is arguably the best ETB aesthetic in years. Nine boosters plus premium accessories make it a fantastic display piece even if your pulls aren't stellar.

Booster Bundle & Box

The real stars of the show. I pulled multiple chase cards including Ethan's Typhlosion IR (my personal favorite) and the stunning Ho-Oh ex SIR. The consistently solid pull rates across 46 packs proved this set's generosity wasn't a fluke.

Top Pulls That Stole My Heart

Among the incredible cards I encountered, these five stand out:

Ethan's Ho-Oh ex (SIR 239/182)

A breathtaking sunset scene showcasing one of Pokémon's most legendary birds. The artwork alone justifies collecting this card, but its energy acceleration mechanic makes it tournament-worthy too.

Arven's Mabosstiff ex (235/182)

Pure emotional power in cardboard form. Between the touching artwork and versatile battle effects, this good boy deserves a spot in every trainer's collection.

Team Rocket's Crobat ex (217/182)

A strategic gem that enables devastating damage spread combos. The full-art ex design gives this sinister bat extra collector appeal.

Ethan's Typhlosion (IR 190/182)

My personal favorite - an explosive moment frozen in time that perfectly captures Ethan's bond with his partner. The dynamic composition sets a new standard for illustration rares.

Team Rocket's Houndoom (191/182)

Dark, dramatic, and dripping with personality. This underrated fire-type finally gets the premium treatment it deserves.

Final Verdict

Destined Rivals marks a triumphant return to form for Pokémon TCG. Between the gorgeous artwork, improved pull rates, and innovative Trainer-focused mechanics, this might be the most complete Scarlet & Violet set yet. My only warning? You'll want to pre-order early - this one's going to sell fast.
