Overwatch Mobile could still be coming as Nexon pen new deal with Blizzard

Overwatch Mobile Could Still Be on the Way as Nexon Signs New Deal with Blizzard

  • The primary focus of the agreement involves publishing and development rights for StarCraft.
  • Reports suggest a potential MOBA spinoff or sequel to Overwatch is also in the works.

Overwatch’s arrival on mobile has long seemed like a distant dream, especially after Jason Schreier’s recent book revealed that Blizzard had shelved plans for a handheld version. However, a newly signed agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard may change that trajectory.

The core of this deal centers on the publishing and development rights for a new entry in the iconic StarCraft RTS franchise. Competition was fierce, with rivals like Krafton and Netmarble reportedly expressing interest. If confirmed, Nexon will lead future titles in the series.

Most intriguingly, reports indicate that Overwatch mobile publishing rights were also part of the bidding process. This suggests the mobile port is alive and well, potentially taking the form of an official MOBA sequel rather than a simple port.

Nerf this

This wouldn’t be Overwatch’s first foray into the MOBA genre, given Blizzard’s past push of Heroes of the Storm. It is certainly possible that Heroes of the Storm could arrive on mobile, serving as the proposed Overwatch MOBA in question.

Alternatively, we may see a dedicated spinoff release. However, an 'Overwatch 3' remains unlikely for this platform, as it would mark a significant shift from the franchise’s console and PC roots.

Borrowing heavily from MOBA mechanics could benefit Overwatch. With competitors like Marvel Rivals gaining ground, Blizzard and its partners may need to take bold steps to revitalize the once-dominant IP.
