Nvidia's New App Causes FPS Drops in Some Games
Nvidia's recently released application is causing frame rate (FPS) drops in specific games and PC configurations. This article explores the performance issues stemming from Nvidia's latest game optimization software.
Performance Issues Across Games and Systems
Testing by PC Gamer revealed inconsistent frame rates in some games when using the Nvidia App. Several users reported stuttering. An Nvidia employee suggested a temporary solution: disabling the "Game Filters and Photo Mode" overlay.
Initial tests with Black Myth: Wukong (Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super) showed a slight FPS increase (59 fps to 63 fps at 1080p Very High settings) with the overlay off. However, enabling the overlay and lowering graphics to Medium resulted in a significant 12% FPS drop. Cyberpunk 2077 tests (Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4080 Super) showed no noticeable difference with the overlay enabled or disabled. This suggests the problem affects specific games and hardware combinations.
These findings, reported on Twitter (X), prompted further discussion and suggestions, including reverting to older drivers. Currently, Nvidia's official response is limited to the overlay disable workaround.
Nvidia App's Official Launch and Ongoing Issues
The Nvidia App, launched in beta on February 22, 2024, replaced GeForce Experience, providing GPU optimization, game recording, and more. Its official November 2024 release coincided with a driver update. While offering improved features, the FPS drop issue highlights a need for further investigation and a more comprehensive fix from Nvidia.
Nvidia needs to address the performance inconsistencies affecting some users to ensure a smooth experience with its new application.
