Author : Natalie Feb 14,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 2nd, 2024! While it might be a holiday in the US, it's business as usual here in Japan. That means a fresh batch of reviews for your perusal – three from me, and one from our esteemed colleague Mikhail. I'll be covering Bakeru, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, and Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, while Mikhail tackles Peglin with his usual insightful expertise. Plus, we have some news from Mikhail, and a colossal list of deals from Nintendo's Blockbuster Sale. Let's dive in!

News

Guilty Gear Strive Arrives on Nintendo Switch in January 2025

Arc System Works is bringing Guilty Gear Strive to the Nintendo Switch on January 23rd! This version boasts 28 characters and crucial rollback netcode for online play. While cross-play is unfortunately absent, it promises a solid offline experience and engaging battles with other Switch players. Having thoroughly enjoyed the game on Steam Deck and PS5, I'm eagerly anticipating this release. Check out the official website for more details.

Reviews & Mini-Views

Bakeru ($39.99)

Let's be clear: Bakeru isn't Goemon/Mystical Ninja, despite sharing some surface-level similarities with the series created by some of the same developers. It's crucial to approach Bakeru as its own unique entity, not as a Goemon sequel. Bakeru is a product of Good-Feel, a studio known for charming, accessible platformers in the Wario, Yoshi, and Kirby universes. And that's precisely what Bakeru delivers.

The game unfolds in a Japan-inspired setting, where you play as Issun, aided by the shape-shifting tanuki, Bakeru. Your adventure spans over sixty levels, offering a relaxed yet engaging experience. The collectibles are particularly noteworthy, often reflecting the unique aspects of each Japanese location, providing a wealth of cultural insights.

The boss battles are a highlight, showcasing Good-Feel's knack for creative and rewarding encounters. While the game takes some creative risks, some elements work better than others – a common occurrence in this genre. Despite its flaws, Bakeru's charm is undeniable; it's intensely likeable.

The Switch version's performance is a minor drawback, with a fluctuating framerate that can dip noticeably during intense moments. While personally I'm not overly sensitive to inconsistent framerates, those who are should be aware of this issue, even with improvements since its Japanese release.

Bakeru is a delightful 3D platformer with polished gameplay and inventive design elements. Its commitment to its unique style is infectious. While performance issues on Switch and the lack of any Goemon connection might disappoint some, it remains a highly recommended title.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ($19.99)

The prequel trilogy era spawned a wave of Star Wars merchandise, including numerous video games. Star Wars: Bounty Hunter tells the story of Jango Fett, Boba Fett's father, before his infamous demise in Attack of the Clones. The game casts you as Jango, tasked with hunting a Dark Jedi for Count Dooku, with opportunities to take on additional bounties.

The gameplay involves navigating levels, targeting enemies, and utilizing a variety of weapons and gadgets, including the iconic jetpack. While initially engaging, the repetitive gameplay and dated mechanics (common in early 2000s games) can become tiresome. Targeting is imprecise, cover mechanics are flawed, and level design feels cramped.

Aspyr's updated version boasts improved visuals and performance, along with a refined control scheme. However, the archaic save system remains, potentially leading to frustrating restarts. The inclusion of a Boba Fett skin is a nice touch.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter possesses a certain nostalgic charm, reflecting the stylistic quirks of early 2000s games. If you're seeking a retro gaming experience with a Star Wars twist, this updated version is the way to go. Otherwise, its dated mechanics might prove off-putting.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain ($19.99)

Drawing clear inspiration from Studio Ghibli, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain puts you in the role of a novice witch whose flying broom is broken. To earn money for repairs, you take on package delivery jobs, zipping around on your broom.

The gameplay loop involves completing deliveries and occasional side jobs. The vibrant world and engaging characters enhance the experience, but performance issues on the Switch, impacting resolution and framerate, are noticeable. The game likely runs better on more powerful hardware.

While the core gameplay mechanic can become repetitive, the charming world and quirky characters make it enjoyable. If the premise appeals to you, you'll likely find it a worthwhile experience despite its technical limitations.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Peglin ($19.99)

Peglin, a pachinko-inspired roguelike, has reached its 1.0 release across multiple platforms, including Switch. The game involves aiming an orb at pegs on a board to damage enemies and progress through zones. The strategic element lies in utilizing critical and bomb pegs effectively.

The Switch port performs well, though aiming feels less smooth than on other platforms. Touch controls offer a viable alternative. Load times are longer than on mobile, a point to consider for multi-platform owners. The inclusion of in-game achievement tracking is a welcome addition.

Despite some balance issues and the lack of cross-save functionality, Peglin is a fantastic addition to the Switch library, especially for fans of pachinko and roguelike mechanics. The developers' use of Switch features, including rumble and touchscreen support, is commendable.

Peglin is a must-have for those who appreciate the unique blend of pachinko and roguelike elements. The excellent use of Switch features makes it a highly enjoyable experience. -Mikhail Madnani
