Professor Layton Was Supposed to End Until Nintendo Stepped In

Professor Layton is dusting off his top hat and preparing for a new chapter in his puzzle-filled journey—all thanks to a timely nudge from Nintendo. After years of silence, the beloved brain-teasing adventurer is making a triumphant return, and the story behind his revival is as intriguing as the mysteries he solves.

The Series Was Meant to End—Until Nintendo Stepped In

After nearly a decade since Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy brought what was thought to be a graceful conclusion to the series, fans had resigned themselves to bidding farewell to the iconic puzzle master. However, during Tokyo Game Show 2024, LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino revealed that the franchise’s return was inspired by external encouragement—specifically from “Company N,” widely recognized as Nintendo.

Speaking at a panel with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Hino shared that while LEVEL-5 believed the series had reached a satisfying endpoint, influential figures within the gaming industry expressed a strong desire for a new installment. Among them, Nintendo played a pivotal role.

“There hasn’t been a new title in almost 10 years. The series concluded briefly,” Hino explained, according to AUTOMATON. “Certain individuals from the industry really wanted us to release a new game—we had a strong push coming from company ‘N’.”

This revelation aligns with Nintendo’s long-standing relationship with the franchise. As the publisher of multiple Professor Layton entries and the platform provider for the Nintendo DS and 3DS—where the series flourished—the company has always viewed the series as a flagship intellectual property. Its support was instrumental in bringing the professor back to life.

“When I heard these opinions, I started to think it would be good to make a new game so that fans could enjoy the series at the level of quality provided by the latest console,” Hino added.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: A Fresh Adventure Awaits

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam picks up one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, reuniting the esteemed professor with his faithful apprentice, Luke Triton. The duo travels to Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered entirely by steam technology, where they are drawn into a mysterious case involving none other than Gunman King Joe—a legendary gunslinger said to haunt the city as a ghost, symbolizing those left behind by modernization.

True to the series’ roots, the game will feature a rich array of challenging puzzles designed in collaboration with QuizKnock, a renowned Japanese puzzle group celebrated for their creative and engaging brain teasers. This partnership has reignited fan enthusiasm, especially following the mixed reception of Layton’s Mystery Journey, which shifted focus to Professor Layton’s daughter, Katrielle, and strayed from the original formula.

With a return to classic storytelling, deeper narrative immersion, and next-gen visuals, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam aims to honor the legacy of the series while embracing modern gaming standards. Stay tuned for more updates on gameplay mechanics, release date, and platforms.
