Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. Let's examine what went wrong with the August 2024 collaboration.
The Issues
Shift Up acknowledges several shortcomings. While Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato appeared in costumes faithful to their original designs, this didn't resonate with players.
The initial Shift Up designs for the Evangelion characters were considered too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, leading to alterations. The revised, more modest designs satisfied the licensors, but the resulting aesthetic failed to excite the player base.
Player Reception
The underwhelming costumes weren't the only problem. Players saw little incentive to purchase limited-time characters or skins, especially when the skins offered minimal visual differences. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, closely resembled her standard model, a significant turn-off for players.
Goddess of Victory: NIKKE's appeal stems from its bold anime aesthetic and engaging narrative. Recent collaborations, however, are perceived as diluting this identity, making them feel less worthwhile.
The collaboration's execution, including uninspired designs and a drawn-out event, also received criticism. Shift Up assures they are incorporating player feedback into future events. Let's hope this translates into more compelling content.
You can find Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE on the Google Play Store. Instead of underwhelming crossovers, we anticipate Shift Up will deliver more engaging content in the future.
