James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film introduces a fresh take on the iconic hero, featuring Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. The actor recently shared insights on his unique portrayal, revealing a character that stands apart from previous depictions on screen.
“He’s brash and unapologetic,” Fillion told TV Guide in a recent interview. “To be a Green Lantern, you don’t need to be virtuous—just fearless. Guy Gardner embodies that fearlessness, but he’s far from kind. As an actor, it’s liberating to lean into his selfish, self-serving choices and run with them.”
Fillion also highlighted Gardner’s inflated sense of self. “His real superpower might be his overconfidence, believing he could challenge Superman himself,” he said. “Spoiler: he can’t!”
Set to launch the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, Superman kicks off the Gods and Monsters chapter. Meanwhile, the Green Lanterns are also getting the spotlight in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, slated for a 2026 debut.
Superman features David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Written and directed by James Gunn, the film hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
