Due to time constraints, New Line Cinema had to trim the movies for theatrical release, resulting in the official theatrical cuts. These versions are shorter yet still substantial (over two hours each), and some argue they're more action-focused and tightly paced than the extended versions.
However, the extended editions offer significantly more content, with additional scenes, extended sequences, and enhanced context not available in the shorter versions. The main difference is length: The Fellowship of the Ring extended edition is about 30 minutes longer, The Two Towers adds about 45 minutes, and The Return of the King includes nearly an hour of extra footage.
